I have experienced issues with a friend Zack where he could not browse to any website, ping any dns address but could ping his router and use all other apps such as skype. After running these 2 commands he rebooted and all workd well again until he rebooted the next time.
netsh winsock reset catalog
This will essentially reset winsock to factory defaults. In some cases not even that does the trick in which case run the following in conjunction with the above
netsh int ip reset reset.log
This will rebuild your tcp/ip stack.
I still don't know why it will not let him browse. I suspect it be a dns issue which in that case, it is a bitch to fix. Let's just all memorize ip addresses lol. I had him go into local area connection properties and under advanced and dns everything was as I had it, to their defaults. He had done no updates or installs since service pack 3 which was a while ago and everything had been working up until last friday. I connected the 2 by remembering when Mike couldn't browse or ping, though he had installed and removed and installed and removed sp3 to the point of no return, rendering something with dns useless. I may be wrong, however and it may not even be dns at all, but if someone cannot ping www.google.com or browse to it but can ping ip addresses, at least a default gateway, then I would think dns should be the culpret.
Anyone knowledgeable here on this issue?
Did you have him do a virus scan to make sure that he doesn't have some type of virus?
Yeah I did, but I didn't have one. My SP3 install just got majorly screwed up. I installed it, and it froze, so i canceled it, and did another install. That's when it messed up.
neighter of these guys had viruses. they are not the culpret and even if it was a virus it would have been a strange one to do such pointlet activity.
Yeah, these guys are virus free, probably.
Thanks for those commands, Cody.
That is really wierd,. Luckily, I've never had anything like that hapin before.
You don't know they are virus free for certain. With things such as rootkits and the sifistication of new viruses the only way to insure you have a clean computer is to reformat including the boot sector since no program or user can detect everything that is out there now.
You can rest assured that neither of these 2 had viruses. Besides, it is not something a rootkit nor a virus would do. If it was a said rootkit or otherwise, the effects would be more more obvious and noticeable.
Are you sure it isn't one of the bogus Vista SP's floating around on the Net? I have a friend who got hit by one of those, and when she restarted after the update, lost Net access, then when she restarted a second time, she got a CSX Corrupted Volume Error. My advice is in agreement with post 6; it might be time to format the HD.
Neither of us have or want vista.
To post 7 you just prove your constant ignirence. You have no way of knowing the computer is clean unless you do a complete format wipe out the boot sector and reinstall with out it connected to the internet. Viruses and rootkits don't always show symptums, after all sometimes the viruses are doing work for someone else in which case having them removed would be detremental to who ever installed them. It's quite possible the DNS issue could be an unattended bug in some malware that is installed with out your knolidge.
Cody and I believe that the DNS issue was because of something that went wrong with the installation of SP3.
If the dns issue started happening with the toying with sp3 then sp3 is the issue. I am not quite sure why we default to blaming a virus or malware when clearly a problem started occuring with the sp3 install. I have done some research on this issue and some people have had a bogus install of sp3 and in one case a guy couldn't launch explorer because of it. I seem to have forgotten more details. post 7, it was not a virus. To post 10 I suspect you are a maker of viruses. As I do not spend much time in windows I don't concern myself with viruses or the like. As my name implies I am knux dude I spend my time in knoppix or mac osx. If not even reverse dns resolution is possible or forward is possible, then I'm unsure what could fix it. It could be, though there is a dll somewhere or exe for the dns protocol such as there is for tcp/ip.sys or winsock. Like i said before I don't mess around with windows much it is merely a toy to me and learn more from other platforms, but I hope my advice, for what is worth, helped in some way.
To post 12 god your an idiot. If I were a maker of viruses I'd have already created a rootkit to infect your so secure mac and linux. I didn't say it had to be a virus but it's something that can't be ruled out just because you wern't able to find anything.
wonder if this would help: open dns if running xp go to start menu then control pannel then network connection hit enter! then alt-enter for properties then in the general tab go to internet protocall radio button! tab to properties again hit enter! once there look for dns and if it says automatically get ip address arrow down to always use this ip address and in the main dns edit box type 208.67.222.222 and in the alternate dns edit box type 208.67.220.220 then tab to ok hit enter! this is also supose to work if your internet service provider is down!
Post 14 are those generic dns servers on the internet? If so thanks I will take note of them and keep them for reference.
to RBM I wasn't trying to push any other platforms down your thrroat. Imho you emit a very strong self centeredness about yourself, as if you know everything and everyone else is wrong. I was merely making a comment.
